UZBEKISTAN - CENTRAL ASIA RCC PROPOSAL ENDORSEMENT & SUBMISSION - On Wednesday July 22nd, 2009 the RCC proposal received the official endorsement of the Multisectoral Expert Council on HIV, TB and Malaria (MEC). In a statement made during the MEC meeting on behalf of the United Nation system in Uzbekistan, the UN representatives: i) endorsed the RCC application as a continuation of the successful Round 3 proposal pursuing the same programmatic goals and objectives; ii) expressed deep regret that the proposal does not provide for continuation and scale up of substitution treatment, which remains one of the most effective methods of HIV prevention among injecting drug users, and iii) reiterated the assurances of sustained UN's commitment to support scale up of appropriate HIV responses in Uzbekistan. The UN agencies further reconfirmed that they stand ready to assist the Ministry of Health and other partners in evaluating the completed pilot project on OST, as well as in collecting new, convincing evidence and re-establishing the service in the nearest future. UZBEKISTAN - CENTRAL ASIA TRAINING ON HIV-RELATED ISSUES FOR MEDIA PROFESSIONALS - On July 1 - 4, 2009 UNESCO Tashkent Office in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the International In-Service Training Centre for Journalists conducted a national training for media professionals on the "Coverage of HIV and AIDS issues in the mass-media". A team of trainers consisting of one international master-trainer and four national trainers came together to share, with selected media professionals coming from 7 regions of Uzbekistan, the latest scientific updates and journalistic techniques on the coverage of different HIV related issues in mass-media. The training aimed to: i) strengthen the capacity of national reporters in covering HIV issues in the media; and ii) prepare national trainers to run workshops for their colleagues on the coverage of HIV-related subjects. The different sessions were led by experts and representatives of the Republican AIDS Center and UN agencies. UZBEKISTAN - CENTRAL ASIA JOINT UN TEAM MEETING - On Thursday June 18th, 2009 the UN Joint Team on AIDS met to share updates on the latest development in the HIV response in Uzbekistan, receive information on the HIV Law development process and discuss the Joint Team involvement and responsibilities in UN CARES implementation.
