The United Nations yesterday sent a convoy of 28 trucks loaded with humanitarian relief from the city of Andijon in Uzbekistan to the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh to assist people affected by the recent unrest in southern Kyrgyzstan. Over the past week, the vast majority of the refugees have returned home, and the UN agreed with the Government of Uzbekistan to transfer the aid to southern Kyrgyzstan where it is urgently needed. The consignment consisted of food, tents, blankets, water & sanitation material as well as health and hygiene kits from UNCHR, UNICEF, WFP and OCHA. This relief will now support the humanitarian response to the estimated 375,000 internally displaced persons (IDP), returnees and host families in and around Osh and Jalalabad.
