NEWS LISTUN asks for $71 million in relief appeal after ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan
The United Nations today called for $71 million to assist hundreds of thousands of people affected by ethnic conflict in Kyrgyzstan, as the top UN official in Central Asia said an international security presence may be needed to calm tensions and prevent a fresh eruption of the deadly violence that rocked the country a week ago. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today voiced his appreciation for Uzbekistan's efforts to address the crisis in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, where the security situation is reported to be fragile, days after deadly inter-ethnic clashes erupted. The Uzbek Government estimates that around 75,000 people from southern Kyrgyzstan have crossed over the border since the clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks began last week. This year's observance of World No Tobacco Day focuses on "Gender and tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing to women". Although fewer than one out of ten women are smokers, that still adds up to an estimated 200 million women around the world. Moreover, that number could grow, since the tobacco industry is spending heavily on advertisements that target women and associate tobacco use with beauty and liberation. |
