World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Philippe Le Houérou, Visits Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, May 5, 2010-Philippe Le Houérou, World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, completed his April 29th - May 3rd visit to Uzbekistan. He was accompanied by Motoo Konishi, World Bank Country Director for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and other World Bank officials.

UN SECRETARY-GENERAL VISITS UZBEKISTAN- On the third leg of the five-country tour to Central Asia, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited Uzbekistan on April 4-5, 2010. The visit that started in Nukus included the helicopter flight over the Aral Sea with the stop in Muynak. Secretary-General said he was "shocked" at the sight, and termed it as "one of the worst environmental disasters of the world". "It was a vivid testament to what [...] happens [...] when we waste our common natural resources, when we neglect our environment, when we mismanage our environment".
