United Nations Department of Safety and Security United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) was established on 1 January 2005, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 59/276, part XI. The Department of Safety and Security is comprised of all security elements of the United Nations system, including those formerly known as the Office of the United Nations Security Coordinator (UNSECOORD), the Security and Safety Services (SSS), and the Department of Peace-keeping Operations (DPKO) security elements responsible for civilian personnel in DPKO missions. DSS Mission Statement The Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational Support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations System.
